A sample question from Elementary Level

A table shows the pets in a class: Dogs 8, Cats 5, Fish 3. How many pets are in the table in all?

Answer: 16

Worked solution

  1. Add the three numbers: 8 + 5 + 3.
  2. 8 + 5 + 3 = 16.
  3. Tempting wrong choice 13: left out the fish.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

SSAT Middle Level — Quantitative

Grades 5–7

For students now in grades 5–7. The two math sections of the Middle Level SSAT: arithmetic and estimation, number properties, fractions, decimals, percents and ratios, elementary algebra and made-up operations, geometry and measurement, averages, graphs and probability, and spatial-logic puzzles. 50 questions in two 30-minute sections of 25, five choices, no calculator; a quarter point is taken off for each wrong answer.

A sample question from Middle Level

If K + 4 is less than 9, then 3 x K MUST be less than

Answer: 15

Worked solution

  1. K + 4 < 9 means K < 5.
  2. Multiply by 3: 3 x K < 15.
  3. K could be 4.5, making 3 x K = 13.5, so 3 x K need not be less than 12, 9, 5, or 3. Only 15 is certain.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

SSAT Upper Level — Quantitative

Grades 8–11

For students now in grades 8–11. The two math sections of the Upper Level SSAT: arithmetic, number properties and exponents, fractions, percents and ratios, linear equations and inequalities, made-up operations, algebra word problems and slope, angles, area, circles and volume, averages, graphs and probability, and spatial-logic and counting puzzles. 50 questions in two 30-minute sections of 25, five choices, no calculator; a quarter point is taken off for each wrong answer.

A sample question from Upper Level

Which of the following is greater than 5/8?

Answer: 1320\dfrac{13}{20}

Worked solution

  1. 5/8 = 0.625.
  2. As decimals: 3/5 = 0.6, 20/32 = 0.625 (equal, not greater), 13/20 = 0.65, 7/12 ≈ 0.583, 9/16 = 0.5625.
  3. Only 13/20 is greater than 5/8.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.
