A sample question from Levels 1–2

Ben picked more than 3 apples but fewer than 5. How many apples did Ben pick?

Answer: 4

Worked solution

  1. More than 3 means 4 or more. Fewer than 5 means 4 or less.
  2. So Ben picked 4.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

A sample question from Levels 3–4

How many 2-digit numbers have digits that multiply to 12?

Answer: 4

Worked solution

  1. 12 = 2 × 6 = 3 × 4 (1 × 12 fails, 12 is not a digit).
  2. Each pair gives two numbers: 26, 62, 34, 43.
  3. That is 4 numbers.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

Math Kangaroo — Levels 5–6

Grades 5–6. Ratio and percent, area and angles, factors and remainders, and the first counting rules.

A sample question from Levels 5–6

A red bag and a blue bag together weigh exactly as much as a green bag and a yellow bag. The red and green bags together weigh more than the blue and yellow bags. The blue and green bags together weigh more than the red and yellow bags. Which bag is the lightest?

Answer: yellow

Worked solution

  1. Write R + B = G + Y, R + G > B + Y and B + G > R + Y.
  2. Add the two 'more than' facts: R + B + 2G > R + B + 2Y, so G > Y.
  3. From R + B = G + Y and R + G > B + Y: subtracting gives G - B > B - G, so G > B; similarly the third fact gives G > R. So green is heaviest.
  4. R + B = G + Y with G the biggest means Y is smaller than both R and B (R = G + Y - B > Y, B = G + Y - R > Y).
  5. So yellow is the lightest.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

A sample question from Levels 7–8

Words are written in plain capital letters. Which word has a vertical line of symmetry when its letters are stacked one above another, and also a horizontal line of symmetry when it is written normally across the page?

Answer: OHIO

Worked solution

  1. Stacked one above another, the word has a vertical line of symmetry only if every letter has one.
  2. Written across the page, it has a horizontal line of symmetry only if every letter has one.
  3. So every letter needs both lines: only H, I, O and X qualify.
  4. TOOT and AXIOM fail across the page (T, A, M); BOX and HIKE fail when stacked (B, K, E). OHIO works.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

A sample question from Levels 9–10

Which two of the numbers 7, 11, 13 and 20 add up to 24?

Answer: 11 and 13

Worked solution

  1. Check the pairs: 7 + 11 = 18, 7 + 13 = 20, 7 + 20 = 27, 11 + 13 = 24.
  2. So the pair is 11 and 13.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

A sample question from Levels 11–12

Marbles numbered 1 to 2015 are coloured so that marbles with the same digit sum share a colour and different digit sums get different colours. How many colours are used on exactly one marble?

Answer: 1

Worked solution

  1. Digit sums run from 1 to 28.
  2. Digit sum 28 needs 1999 only (the other digits must be 9, 9, 9 after a leading 1): one marble.
  3. Any sum s from 1 to 27 appears at least twice: once on a number below 1000 with digit sum s, and once on 1abc where abc has digit sum s − 1.
  4. So exactly one colour appears on a single marble.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.
