  1. Understanding the Text

    What the passage says and what it is about.

    • Main Idea — State the passage's point in one sentence before reading the choices. The right answer is neither a single detail nor broader than the passage.
    • Supporting Details — Locate the line; the answer paraphrases it. For 'which is mentioned' questions, check each choice against the text.

  2. Interpreting the Text

    What the passage implies, what its words mean here, and how and why it is written.

    • Inference — Choose what the text most strongly supports; you should be able to point to the evidence.
    • Vocabulary in Context — Replace the word with each choice and reread the sentence; the context, not the dictionary's first meaning, decides.
    • Author's Purpose, Tone & Organization — Ask what job a sentence or paragraph does: example, concession, contrast, emphasis, framing. For tone, pick the measured word over the extreme one.
