What Middle Level covers

Reading for students applying to grades 7–8: passages from science, history, the arts, biography and fiction, each followed by questions on the main idea, supporting details, inference, vocabulary in context, and the author's purpose, tone and organization. 36 questions in 35 minutes.

Unit questions open after sign-in with a Series pass. Each child's first round is free, with its summary.

  1. Understanding the Text

What the passage says and what it is about.

    2 units

    • Main Idea — After reading, say the passage's point in one sentence. The right answer covers the WHOLE passage — not one paragraph, not too broad.
    • Supporting Details — Go back to the passage and find the line. The answer is stated there, usually in different words.
  2. Interpreting the Text

What the passage suggests, what its words mean here, and why the author wrote it this way.

    3 units

    • Inference — An inference must be SUPPORTED by the text. Point to the sentence that makes your choice likely.
    • Vocabulary in Context — Reread the sentence, cover the word, and put your own word in. Choose the option that matches THAT meaning, even if the word has a more common meaning elsewhere.
    • Author's Purpose & Organization — Ask WHY the author included this sentence, comparison or paragraph: to give an example, to show a contrast, to answer an objection, to set up a question.

Moving up to Upper Level

  • Cover at least 80% of this Level's knowledge points, with at least 50% of them mastered (confirmed by spaced review, not one good day).
  • Pass 2 full-length practice exams on different papers, at least 7 days apart, within 60 days.
  • Answer at a steady pace: a median of 58 seconds a question or less.
  • Or, when the signs are there, take the next Level's entry check: 75% or more moves up straight away.
