What Lower Level covers

Reading for students applying to grades 5–6: short passages about science, history, nature and everyday life, with questions on the main idea, details, inference, vocabulary and the author's purpose. 25 questions in 25 minutes.

Unit questions open after sign-in with a Series pass. Each child's first round is free, with its summary.

  1. Understanding the Text

What the passage says and what it is about.

    2 units

    • Main Idea — Ask: what is the WHOLE passage about? Pick the answer that fits every paragraph.
    • Supporting Details — Go back and find the sentence that answers the question.
  2. Interpreting the Text

What the passage suggests, what words mean, and why the author wrote it.

    3 units

    • Inference — Use clues from the text plus what you know. Find the sentence that supports your answer.
    • Vocabulary in Context — Reread the sentence and put each choice in place of the word.
    • Author's Purpose & Organization — Ask WHY the author wrote it this way: to explain, to tell a story, to give an example, to make you laugh.

Moving up to Middle Level

  • Cover at least 80% of this Level's knowledge points, with at least 50% of them mastered (confirmed by spaced review, not one good day).
  • Pass 2 full-length practice exams on different papers, at least 7 days apart, within 60 days.
  • Answer at a steady pace: a median of 60 seconds a question or less.
  • Or, when the signs are there, take the next Level's entry check: 75% or more moves up straight away.
