A sample question from MATHCOUNTS
What is the sum of all real solutions of (x^2 − 4)(x^2 − 6x + 5) = 21(x^2 + x − 2)?
Answer: 6
Worked solution
- Factor: (x − 2)(x + 2)(x − 1)(x − 5) = 21(x + 2)(x − 1).
- x = −2 and x = 1 make both sides 0, so they are solutions.
- Otherwise divide by (x + 2)(x − 1): (x − 2)(x − 5) = 21, i.e. x^2 − 7x − 11 = 0.
- Its discriminant 49 + 44 = 93 > 0 gives two real roots (neither is −2 or 1) with sum 7.
- Total: −2 + 1 + 7 = 6.
Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.
