Synonyms
Choose the word closest in meaning to the word in capitals.

- Synonyms — Advanced Vocabulary — Recall a phrase you have met the word in ('an ephemeral fad'), then test each choice in that phrase.
- Synonyms — Latin & Greek Roots — magn = great, anim = spirit, circum = around, spect = look, loqu = speak, tract = draw. Combine the parts, then sanity-check with a phrase.
- Synonyms — Second Meanings — When the familiar meaning is missing from the choices, switch to the word's verb or older sense (qualify a claim; second a motion).
Analogies
Name the relationship precisely, then match it in the same order.

- Analogies — Opposites & Lack — Many Upper 'opposites' are LACK relations: a novice lacks experience. Say 'X lacks Y' and test the choices.
- Analogies — Degree & Defining Qualities — Degree: 'X is an extreme Y'. Quality: 'a good X must have Y'. Decide which before reading choices.
- Analogies — Parts, Groups & Kinds — Kind of, part of, member of — and keep the direction.
- Analogies — Function, Workers & Products — Largest Upper relationship (27%): what it does, prevents, makes or is used by.
- Analogies — Causes, Processes & Sequences — Process → result, beginning → end, person → the place they belong.

- Relationship: A miser is characterized by stinginess; a bully is characterized by cruelty.
- Check the answer in the same sentence: bully is to cruelty fits.
- The others fail: victim is to fear person and feeling; coin is to money part and whole; playground is to game place and activity; cruelty is to bully has the right relationship in the wrong order.
