  1. Understanding the Text

    What the passage says and what it is about.

    • Main Idea — The main idea answers 'so what?' for the whole passage — including its turn or qualification.
    • Supporting Details — Locate, then match meaning — wrong choices borrow the passage's words in the wrong combination.

  2. Interpreting the Text

    Inference, vocabulary, craft, figurative language and argument.

    • Inference & Prediction — Combine two clues. The best inference is the one the passage makes almost certain — not merely possible.
    • Vocabulary in Context — Upper vocabulary items often test a familiar word in an unfamiliar sense; trust the sentence over the dictionary's first entry.
    • Author's Purpose, Tone & Structure — Function questions: what does this sentence or paragraph DO in the argument or story?
    • Poetry & Figurative Language — Identify the device, then the effect; for poems, track where the poem turns.
    • Arguments & Evidence — Map claim → evidence → concession → conclusion; strengthen/weaken items target the link between evidence and claim.
