Understanding the Text
What the passage says and what it is about.
2 units
- Main Idea — Say the point in one sentence after reading; the answer covers the whole passage.
- Supporting Details — Find the line. The right answer restates it; wrong answers twist a word or use a different paragraph.
Interpreting the Text
What the passage suggests, what its words mean here, and how it is written and argued.
5 units
- Inference & Prediction — Stay close to the text: the right inference is the smallest step from what is written.
- Vocabulary in Context — Plug your own word in; reject the common meaning if the sentence uses another one.
- Author's Purpose & Tone — Ask what a sentence DOES — gives an example, compares, concludes — and which adjective fits the author's voice.
- Figurative Language & Literary Devices — Name the device, then ask what picture or feeling it creates.
- Arguments & Evidence — Find the claim, then the reason given for it. Ask what would make the reason stronger or weaker.
Moving up to Upper Level
- Cover at least 80% of this Level's knowledge points, with at least 50% of them mastered (confirmed by spaced review, not one good day).
- Pass 2 full-length practice exams on different papers, at least 7 days apart, within 60 days.
- Answer at a steady pace: a median of 60 seconds a question or less.
- Or, when the signs are there, take the next Level's entry check: 75% or more moves up straight away.
Questions families ask

- When is the next SSAT Reading date?
- The next official date has not been announced yet. We update the page as soon as the organizer publishes it.
- How much does it cost?
- Each child's first round and its summary are free, with no card needed. After that, a Series pass is $14.99 a month for the whole family (up to 5 people) and covers every Level of the Series, so moving up never meets a new paywall.
