What Upper Level covers

The reasoning math section of the ISEE for students applying to grades 9–12: algebraic and number reasoning, rates and functions, geometric reasoning, data and probability, and quantitative comparisons with variables. 37 questions in 35 minutes, no calculator.

Unit questions open after sign-in with a Series pass. Each child's first round is free, with its summary.

  1. Word Problems

Reasoning with numbers, algebra, rates, geometry and data.

    4 units

    • Number & Algebraic Reasoning — Look for structure before computing: parity, factor counts, percent factors multiplied, squaring an identity.
    • Functions, Rates & Patterns — Rates add (work, speed of separation); average speed is total distance ÷ total time; growth repeats multiplication.
    • Geometry Reasoning — Draw it; find the right triangle; scale lengths by k → areas k², volumes k³.
    • Data & Probability Reasoning — Decide whether order matters; use complements for 'at least'; for averages work with totals.
  2. Quantitative Comparison

Column A vs Column B, with variables.

    1 unit

    • Quantitative Comparison — Simplify each column. With variables, test 0, 1, a fraction, a negative and a large value within the given conditions; if the order changes, choose D.
  3. More topics

Further topics from the exam's official scope.

A sample question from Upper Level

A right triangle has a hypotenuse of length 10. Column A: The area of the triangle Column B: 20 Compare the quantity in Column A with the quantity in Column B.

Answer: The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

Worked solution

  1. The legs a and b satisfy a² + b² = 100, and the area is ab/2.
  2. Legs 6 and 8: area = 24, greater than 20.
  3. Legs 2 and √96: area = √96 ≈ 9.8, less than 20.
  4. Both triangles are possible, so it cannot be determined.

Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.

Questions families ask

What does Prep cover for ISEE Quantitative Reasoning?
Lower Level, Middle Level, Upper Level. Each Level has its own chapter map, practice rounds, sealed practice exams with every answer and worked solution at the end, and a published gate to the next Level.
When is the next ISEE Quantitative Reasoning date?
The next official date has not been announced yet. We update the page as soon as the organizer publishes it.
How much does it cost?
Each child's first round and its summary are free, with no card needed. After that, a Series pass is $14.99 a month for the whole family (up to 5 people) and covers every Level of the Series, so moving up never meets a new paywall.
Does Prep guarantee a score?
No. Prep shows exactly what your child has mastered, what comes next and when they are ready for the next Level. Nobody can promise a contest result.
