What AMC 8 covers
A ladder through the seven pillars of the AMC 8: number sense and fluency, fractions and percents, number theory, algebra and sequences, counting and probability, geometry, and applied word problems. Each strand climbs from a single skill to full contest-style problems.
Unit questions open after sign-in with a Series pass. Each child's first round is free, with its summary.
Number Sense & Fluency
Fast, flexible computation: mental multiplication, order of operations, powers, series sums, and digit puzzles.
4 units
- Smart Multiplication — Regroup factors into tens and hundreds to multiply quickly.
- Order of Operations & Powers — Evaluate exponents and nested operations in the correct order.
- Clever Sums — Use the n(n+1)/2 shortcut to add long runs of numbers.
- Digit Puzzles — Reason about the digits that make up a number.
Fractions, Ratios & Percents
Proportional reasoning: parts of a whole, splitting in ratios, and percent change.
4 units
- Fractions of Quantities — Find a fractional part of an amount.
- Percents — Compute a percent of a quantity using friendly benchmarks.
- Percent Change — Handle discounts, markups, and percent increase or decrease.
- Ratio Splits — Divide a total into shares given a ratio.
Number Theory
Divisibility, remainders, factors, multiples, and other bases.
4 units
- Remainders — Find remainders and reason with modular arithmetic.
- GCF & LCM — Greatest common factor, least common multiple, and their applications.
- Divisor Counting — Count factors from a prime factorization.
- Number Bases — Convert numbers between base 10 and other bases.
Algebra & Sequences
Solving equations and recognizing arithmetic, geometric, and consecutive-integer patterns.
4 units
- Linear Equations — Isolate the unknown in one-variable equations.
- Quadratics — Solve and interpret quadratic equations.
- Arithmetic Sequences & Consecutive Integers — Constant-difference patterns and runs of consecutive integers.
- Geometric Sequences — Constant-ratio patterns and their terms and sums.
Counting & Probability
Systematic counting, arrangements, combinations, dice, and probability.
4 units
- Arrangements & Combinations — Order-matters permutations and order-free combinations.
- Probability — Favorable outcomes over total outcomes.
- Dice & Sums — Count outcomes and sums when rolling dice.
- Skip Counting — Count multiples, evenly spaced lists, and posts-and-gaps.
Geometry
Perimeter, area, triangles, angles, polygons, and composite figures.
5 units
- Perimeter & Area of Rectangles — Perimeter and area of rectangles.
- Squares — Side, perimeter, and area relationships for squares.
- Triangles & the Pythagorean Theorem — Triangle area and right-triangle side lengths.
- Angles & Polygons — Angle sums and interior angles of polygons.
- Composite Figures — Areas built from or subtracted between simple shapes.
Statistics & Data
Summarizing data with mean, median, mode, and range.
2 units
- Averages (Mean) — Compute and reason with the arithmetic mean.
- Median, Mode & Range — The other core data summaries.
Applied Word Problems
Rates and speed, unit conversion, elapsed time, and money.
4 units
- Rates & Speed — Distance-rate-time, including average speed over a whole trip.
- Unit Conversion — Convert between units of length, time, and quantity.
- Elapsed Time & Schedules — Compute durations and work with schedules.
- Money — Costs, change, and coin-value problems.

Moving up to AMC 10
- Cover at least 80% of this Level's knowledge points, with at least 50% of them mastered (confirmed by spaced review, not one good day).
- Pass 2 full-length practice exams on different papers, at least 7 days apart, within 60 days.
- Answer at a steady pace: a median of 96 seconds a question or less.
- Or, when the signs are there, take the next Level's entry check: 75% or more moves up straight away.
A sample question from AMC 8
A recipe makes 15 cookies. Only whole recipes can be made. How many recipes are needed for 200 cookies?
Answer: 14
Worked solution
- 200 ÷ 15 = 13.33…
- 13 recipes make only 195, so 14.
Read-only. Every other question opens after sign-in; each child's first round is free.
Questions families ask
- What does Prep cover for AMC series?
- AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, AIME. Each Level has its own chapter map, practice rounds, sealed practice exams with every answer and worked solution at the end, and a published gate to the next Level.
- When is the next AMC series date?
- Jan 21, 2027 – Jan 27, 2027 · AMC 8 · Jan 21–27, 2027 (school picks a day). Always check the organizer's site before registering.
- How much does it cost?
- Each child's first round and its summary are free, with no card needed. After that, a Series pass is $14.99 a month for the whole family (up to 5 people) and covers every Level of the Series, so moving up never meets a new paywall.
- Does Prep guarantee a score?
- No. Prep shows exactly what your child has mastered, what comes next and when they are ready for the next Level. Nobody can promise a contest result.
